Parasitic Fish Diseases Australia

Fish are often victims of parasitic attack when they are either under stress, wounded or are living in crowded conditions. Aquarium fish can be susceptible to parasites for a variety of reasons, including poor water quality, over-crowding and injury.

Many parasitic problems in fish tanks are due to an increased number of protozoas in the water. Protozoas are single cells organisms which feed off dead skin cells on the fish’s body. They can also be ingested and feed off bacteria in the fish’s gut and the mucus on the gills and skin. Some species can puncture the fish’s skin and feed off the body fluids. Protozoas can create significant problems in their own right, they can also be the precursor to other diseases by the transfer of pathogens from their own bodies and through infection from the puncture wounds they inflict.

Protozoas are naturally occurring and they usually don’t bother fish unless their numbers increase. In most cases this will be due to a build up of organic matter in the tank due to over-crowding or over-feeding. They are also easily transferred from one to tank to another by the use of nets and tubes.

A fish which is suffering from a protozoan infection will usually have skin and gill problems and this can be identified by the rapid breathing and the rubbing of its body against rocks and plants.

Bacterial diseases are extremely common in aquarium fish and can be difficult to diagnose without the aid of a veterinarian. Bacterial infections tend to cause a range of different symptoms making the specific identification difficult, however if you catch the infection early, anti-bacterial formulas from aquarium shops can assist in the fish’s recovery. With bacterial infections there are a few key symptoms to check. A pot-belly is the swelling of the fish’s abdomen and is indicative of a systemic infection which has resulted in the swelling of internal organs. This may also cause the fish to have problems swimming. Uneven scales can be an indication that a bacterial infection is present with raised or missing scales a key indicator. These vulnerable areas on the fish’s body can also leave it susceptible to other infections. Other symptoms may include an inflamed vent, ulcers on the skin or a loss of fin or tail flanges.

Fungal infections tend to develop when the fish’s health is already compromised. These infections are easy to identify as they appear like cotton tufts on the fish’s body. It is unusual for a fungal infection to be the only problem a fish is experiencing. It is important to discover the primary aliment, as the fungal infection will probably reoccur even if it is successfully treated the first time. Generally fungal infections are rare in well maintained tanks. Fungi play an important role in digesting dead and decaying material in the tank and they cannot grow and reproduce unless there is an abundance of this material in their environment.

Other relatively common parasitic pests for aquarium fish are worms, such as skin and gill flukes, tapeworm, anchor worm and fish lice. These worms can find their way into your tank from the transfer of plants, snails and other fish. Worms such as round worms and thread worms are internal parasites, while the anchor worms and fish lice are examples of external parasites. Anchor worms burrow into the fishes’ skin to lay their eggs before they die. They can cause ulcers and inflammation on the fish’s skin and the worm cannot be removed by hand. Flukes can be identified by the appearance of mucus on the gills. The fish may also have red spots on its body, damage to the fins and tail and rapid breathing.

There are water based medications that can be added to your tank to control these pests. A tell tale sign that your fish may have an infestation, even if the parasites are not visible to the eye, is observing your fish flicking for no apparent reason. As worms are nocturnal they will only be visible at night, external worms may hide in rocks and pebbles on the aquarium floor during the day. External worms such as round worms and flat worms usually don’t pose a direct threat to fish and are helpful in keeping down the debris at the bottom of your tank. However if their numbers increase, stop feeding your fish for a few days and they will usually eat these worms as an alternative food source.

Maintaining the optimum health of your fish requires your aquarium to be kept in good condition. Ensure you change the water regularly even if you use a filter. Use a gravel filter to clean out the debris that has settled on the bottom of the tank. Make sure your tank maintains a stable PH balance and test it regularly. Keep the water oxygenated by ensuring there is water movement in the tank. The bulk of your aquarium’s oxygen supply will come from the surface of the water. The use of water bubbles will break the surface tension and allow more oxygen to be absorbed into the water.

Don’t over feed your fish. Buying good quality fish food means your fish won’t need as much food and they will be able to digest it easily. Make sure you are providing the right food for all the species you have in your tank, flaked food is not going to be much use to your ground dwelling species. Finally make sure the fish you choose are all compatible, talk to your fish dealer to ensure you make the right choices.
