Hi George,

Yes, I am an evolutionary biologist, there is simply no other way to understand the world. :D The only consistent characteristic of all life is that it evolves.

nervas έγραψε:
... are there any coral species that decline from normal average growth values, which may be able to develop and reproduce under the new climatic changes?

Very few corals have been tested under the conditions that are likely to be found in the oceans at the end of the century (that is atmospheric CO2 at 850 ppm, and a much lower alkalinity level). However, most of those that have been tested, die. A few persist as "sea anemone" like animals. These animals have an unknown fitness in the real world. The point worth making is that they can survive in a protected laboratory setting, but they probably will not persist in nature. In any case, they would not have skeletons.

nervas έγραψε:
...Or furthermore are there any individuals within the genetic diversity of a species which, based on the Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium, may have reversed the equilibrium itself?

I am not sure what you mean by this. I doubt any tropical coral species are at any sort of genetic equilibrium; until very recently (last week or so... ) most of these organisms were very rapidly speciating, hybridizing and changing; definitive species really don't exist, particularly in the acroporid lineages.

Modern corals are a group of not closely-related lineages which appeared in the Triassic period about 240 Million years ago. They began to form skeletons when sea water chemistry of the time became aragonitic after a rather long period (about 10 million years) of high atmospheric CO2 and low alkalinity. During that previous period there are no records of corals at all.

As a result of this, it is difficult to make a projection as to the progression of specific changes that are likely to occur. However, none of today's corals are likely to be able to form a skeleton when the oceanic alkalinity supersaturation levels drop below about 3. Additionally, other animals will also have problems (such as many snails, calcareous algae (for example Halimeda, and coralline algae, some sponges, and so forth).

It will be a rough time for all.

Cheers,

Ron

Hi Ron,

thanks for your quick reply to my question :) ,

According to your answers there are not a lot of ''chances'' of survival for some species of hard coral :(

I have some extra questions that needs to be replied in the next few days

I am very sad that in a few years we will have the "priviledge " to watch corals only in our tanks  !!!
Unless we change as fast as possible our way of living , the reef's destruction will be inevitable!
